EP 49: Beyond Dream Agents
TRANSCRIPT
I read tweets all the time from authors who say that they’ve signed with their “dream agent.” And I get it. Some agents have sold a lot of books or popular ones (which translates into more money for authors). And some agents have great reputations and experience that paves the way for easier inroads with editors. But here’s the thing… if you only submit to a select list of dream agents, you’re going to severely limit the number of agents you could be querying.
I mentioned before that publishing is a numbers game and that you have to do everything you can to increase your odds of hitting an agent at the exact right time that they’re looking for a manuscript like yours.
The only way to do this is to submit not only to your “dream” agents, but to the “right” agents. That is, all the agents who represent picture book authors and are looking for books like yours.
An agent that will passionately champion your work, support your career ambitions and feel like a partner on your writing journey… to me, that sounds like a dream agent.
Now of course you're going to get a chance to vet your agent before signing with them to make sure that they actually are the dream agent for you. And I’ll get into exactly how to vet your agent in the next video.
In the meantime, thank you so much for watching. If you got any value out of this video, please like it, subscribe to my channel and share the video with any other aspiring picture book authors that you know. Thanks.
