EP 22: Phone Off. Book Published.

TRANSCRIPT

Whether writing in the morning as part of your Unstoppable Author Framework hour or at any other time, you can increase your productivity by eliminating distractions.

And when I say, "distractions," I really mean, "distraction." And by "distraction," I really mean your phone.

My advice to you is to just banish it completely from where you’re doing your writing. Turn off the volume and put it in another room because just having it next to you, it creates too many opportunities to not write. Texts or other notifications might come in and even if they take you out of the flow for a split second, that really is a precious second because you then waste time trying to figure out exactly where you were in your story.

Having your phone nearby also gives you that temptation to reward yourself with like “I'm just going to take a 5-minute Instagram break.” But this takes you out of the flow even longer than texts or notifications. And I understand that this may be difficult at first. But the more you write without your phone nearby, the easier it will become.

Save thing with your computer, close out of email, your calendar, Spotify, Pandora. And if you have a smart watch, put it in the other room with your phone.

One of the reasons I recommend waking up early to do the Unstoppable Author Framework is because when it's early that really is a good time to write because it helps eliminate distractions with less effort. Everything is super quiet in the morning. There’s also a certain peace in doing your writing when it feels like the rest of the world is asleep.

But, no matter when you write, keep your phone away from you. I think you'll be surprised at how much more productive you'll become.
