Hi, most of us tend to look at our phones first thing in the morning. We take a peek at our emails, we scroll through social media. But what we’re actually doing is looking at content other people created instead of our own. Now’s the time to put your own content first.

A while back I heard Marie Forleo say, “Create before you consume.” For me, this simple phrase has been a profound reminder to put my writing first.

Before I heard Marie say this, I’d look at my phone while sipping my coffee. And it was super nice. But then I heard “create before you consume” and everything changed. Looking at the news or scrolling social media or practicing Spanish on Duolingo were doing nothing to help get me published. Even worse, they weren’t aligned with my why. I definitely felt relaxed doing this, but this action actually left me feeling hollow.

So I encourage you to go ahead and have your coffee first thing in the morning. But, while you’re drinking, write! Not only will you make progress toward you goal of becoming a published picture book author, but you’ll also feel like you’ve accomplished something, which makes you feel good about yourself and that inspires you to keep going.
