EP 41: The Pace of Publishing
TRANSCRIPT
One of the things about the publishing industry that really shocked was how slow it moves… especially compared to advertising where everything is so fast-paced.
And I wanted to bring this up to help manage your expectations. The submission process is super slow and boring. Like it can take months, sometimes years, to get responses to your queries from publishers. I’ve literally had books published and then received rejection letters from other publishers. That's how slow it is.
Even getting paid, at least in my own experience, takes forever. Most of my publishers only pay once a year, so I have to wait quite a long time in between paychecks.
As you send out your queries, keep this information in mind. If you do get a quick response – great. Celebrate it. But, more than likely, responses will take a while to roll in. So just relax and know that that’s the way things are. And be aware that even after signing a contract, the process can be excruciatingly slow. Illustrating, designing and planning the launch of a book... they take so much time. And, seriously, don’t get me wrong… it’s worth the wait to see your book published. But, man, the process is just really slow.
Do you have experience with the pace of publishing? I would love to get your feedback on it and what your thoughts are. Let me know in the comments.
