EP 60: Mini-Goals. Major Success.
TRANSCRIPT
Hi, I want to start this video by recapping the Unstoppable Author Goal, which is an 8-week schedule, that I laid out in the previous video:
So, first, Weeks 1-3: Write and refine your manuscript on your own.
Second, Weeks 4-5: Work with one critique partner or a paid editor to perfect your manuscript.
Third, Weeks 6-7: Write and refine your query letter, synopsis and pitch, plus find comparable books.
And fourth, Week 8: Query agents first, and then query publishers.
To make the process even more manageable, you can break up steps 1 and 4 into mini-goals to help you achieve them in ways that just work better for you. For example, if the 25 minutes a day writing as part of the Unstoppable Author Framework isn’t enough time to complete your manuscript in 3 weeks, set another goal to ensure that you do complete your manuscript. This could be writing an hour in the evening when everyone’s asleep, or spending several hours on the weekend.
For querying, Step 4, this just can feel like a never ending process. To make this step not so overwhelming, set mini-goals, such as:
• Querying for one hour each day.
• Or maybe just querying 20 agents/publishers at a time, taking a break, and then coming back and doing the next 20.
Come up with mini goals that work for you. The point is to do whatever it takes to follow the Unstoppable Author Goal in order to increase your odds of becoming a published picture book author.
