EP 62: Writing IS the Reward:

TRANSCRIPT

Hi, I'm classifying this as one of my "unpopular opinion" videos because I think a lot of people will disagree with my point of view.

But anyway I hear a lot of podcasters and bloggers talk about rewarding yourself for writing. Like, if I write for 30 minutes, I’ll have a cookie. Or if I complete 500 words, I’ll look at social media for 15 minutes.

And I get it. I really do. Dangling the carrot provides motivation. But here’s the thing. You want to be a published author, presumably with the goal of making a living from you’re writing. That is, you want to be a professional writer.

As a professional, writing is the reward. Reward yourself with the joy and satisfaction of completing something you set out to do. The cookie or social media scroll won’t bring you deep satisfaction. Writing each day, submitting manuscript and working every day towards your dream will.

Now I know this sounds kind of harsh, but looking at writing as the reward elevates the importance of it and makes the pursuit of your dream that much more meaningful.

So what do you think? Am I being too harsh when it comes to rewards? Let me know in the comments. And as always thank you so much for watching. If you got any value out of this video, like it, subscribe to my channel and share the video with other aspiring picture book authors.
