EP 9: Unpopular Opinion: Motivation
TRANSCRIPT
Hi, a few of my videos I’m classifying as “unpopular opinions” because I think that my opinion may be in the minority.
For instance, this video has to do with motivation. My unpopular opinion is that if you’re committed to becoming a traditionally published picture book author, you don’t need motivation.
Now I know that sounds odd because we often feel like we need to psyche ourselves up to sit down at the computer and start writing or to spend hour after hour on the weekends sending out submissions.
But, in my opinion, true commitment negates the need for motivation.
Commitment means that writing, revising and querying are nonnegotiable for you. You do what needs to be done whether you feel like it or not. With this mindset, the steps you need to become a published author become a daily part of your life, a habit, as much as eating breakfast or brushing your teeth. You don’t need to hype yourself up or say, “Today’s the day I’m going to do it.” There’s just no alternative. You simply do what you need to do. Period.
So that’s my opinion on motivation. What’s yours? Let me know in the comments. And thanks so much for watching.
